For Yoga Teachers

Are you interested in teaching Chair Yoga?

Teaching Chair Yoga may be the most rewarding job you’ve ever had! With every class, you will have the opportunity to empower people to achieve health and wellness. You will facilitate and support each student in maintaining their independence. You will have the opportunity to work with people who may have had limited or negative experiences with exercise, and you will be part of their journey as they learn to find joy in movement. Teaching Chair Yoga will change YOUR life as much as it changes the lives of your students.

If you’re already a Yoga Teacher:

If you’re already a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance, then seek out opportunities to learn more about Chair Yoga in particular, and exercise with older adults in general.

Click here to read a review article by Dr. Bonura outlining best practices for Yoga with older adults.

Bonura, K.B. (2011). The Psychological Benefits of Yoga for Older Adults: Evidence and Guidelines. International Journal of Yoga Therapy, 21, 129 – 142.

In particular:

  • Review The American College of Sports Medicine Position Statement on Older Adults, and CDC Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults Click here.
  • Build relationships with local medical and mental health professionals, in particular practices that work with older adults. Include community center nurses (for instance, at local community centers) and physical therapists in your outreach, to learn more about the variety of resources and services in your area.
  • Look for Yoga Teacher Training continuing education that focuses on older adults and adapted forms of yoga.

If you’d like to become a Yoga Teacher:

Start with a good, basic yoga teacher training program. Look for a program registered with Yoga Alliance (www.yogaalliance.org) and affiliated with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (www.iayt.org).
